چکیده

In the majority of patients receiving multiple transfusions, non-haemolytic febrile transfusion reactions (NHFTR) are caused by leucocyte antibodies. The severity of the reaction depends mostly on the absolute number of leucocytes present in the transfused blood as well as on the titre and the type of antibody in the recipient's plasma; the reaction can be prevented or alleviated by administration of leucocyte depleted blood.'-4 During the last few years filtration has become a popular method for the preparation of leucocyte depleted blood and several filters are currently available. We wish to present the results of evaluating a new filter for leucocyte depletion of blood, Sepacell R-500 (Asahi Medical Co Ltd, Tokyo, Japan), which has been marketed recently.

Spurious Hyperleukocytosis

Hyperleukocytosis is an oncological emergency but is extremely rare in non-malignant conditions. Nucleated RBCs give rise to spuriously high total leucocyte count and cause clinical dilemma. Thalassemia major patients are known to have leucocytosis even after correction for nucleated RBCs. We report a case of undiagnosed Thalassemia major in a 4 month old infant with total leucocyte count highe...

Guidelines on the clinical use of leucocyte-depleted blood components. British Committee for Standards in Haematology, Blood Transfusion Task Force.

Definition: Leucocyte-depleted blood components must contain < 5 × 10 leucocytes per unit (red cells) or adult therapeutic dose (platelets). Practical aspects: To achieve residual leucocyte counts of < 5 × 10, leucocyte-depletion should be carried out under controlled conditions, ideally within 48 h from the collection of the donor unit. The preparation of leucocyte-depleted blood components sh...

Does leucocyte depletion during cardiopulmonary bypass improve oxygenation indices in patients with mild lung dysfunction?

BACKGROUND Leucocyte-depleting arterial line filters have not dramatically improved lung function after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), but patients with pre-existing lung dysfunction may benefit from their use. METHODS We randomized 32 patients with mild lung dysfunction having elective first-time coronary revascularization to either a leucocyte depleting or a standard 40-mm arterial line filt...

Evaluation of Leukoreduction in Packed Cell Units Filtered by Home-Made Bedside Filters: Pre and Post Revision of Product Technology and Materials According to Standard Values

Introduction: Leukocytes causing a wide variety of side effects after transfusion are present in all blood products prepared by standard methods. As a consequence, the use of filter technology for leukoreduction has been widely practiced .According to AABB accreditation in 1996, leukoreduced blood components must contain less than 5×106 leukocytes per unit, but sometimes this value is higher ev...
